1898–99 Stoke F.C. season
The 1898–99 season was Stoke's 11th season of league football.
Overview
In the 1898–99 season automatic promotion and relegation was introduced between the First and Second Divisions and the number of teams was increased to 18. Stoke's fortunes improved marginally as they took 12th place in the expanded First Division.
In August 1898, secretary Bill Rowley transferred himself to Leicester Fosse and at the same time agreed his own signing on fee. This transaction caused uproar and The FA suspended Rowley.[1]
Stoke's form in 1889–99 was inconsistent with only three wins coming in their opening 12 games. The highlight was the 3–0 home win over eventual champions Aston Villa on new-years day.
George Clawley had now returned from Southampton and was made captain of the side. He was in terrific form in The FA Cup as Stoke reached the semi-finals of the competition for the first time. The opponents were Derby County. Stoke battled bravely and did take the lead through William Maxwell but Derby proved to be too good for Stoke with Steve Bloomer scoring a hat-trick in a 3–1 win for Derby. The Stoke players received a £5 bonus for their cup exploits. It would take Stoke another 72 years to reach the semi-final stage again.
